Accra, August 10, 2025 — The National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah (aka “General Mosquito”), was visibly emotional during a visit to the family of the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong in Juaben, Ashanti Region, following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed his life.
According to Citi Newsroom, Mr. Nketiah broke down in tears as he remembered Dr. Sarpong—his longtime friend and party Vice Chairman—especially poignant given that Dr. Sarpong had been scheduled to replace him on the ill-fated flight. He reflected on their decades-long friendship, saying, “He sacrificed his life for me. He was very loyal…I truly appreciate him.”
Dr. Sarpong’s appointment as Board Chairman of the Cocoa Processing Company had been finalized that very morning before the crash, Mr. Nketiah revealed, underscoring the tragic timing of the event.

The helicopter crash, which occurred on August 6, 2025, in the Adansi (Akrofuom) District, also claimed the lives of key government officials––including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed—and six others, making it one of Ghana’s worst air tragedies in recent memory.
